According to DSM, 5 the essential features of Social Anxiety Disorder is a marked or , intense fear or anxiety of social situations in which others may scrutinize the individual. Examples of social situation which might provoke extreme anxiety include having a conversation, meeting unfamiliar people, being observed (eating or drinking) and performing in front of others (giving a speech). So, people with Social Anxiety Disorders start avoiding social situations with the 12 months prevalence rate for social anxiety disorder at 7 per cent.
Like most anxiety disorders, social anxiety disorder can be managed by Psychotherapy or Anti-anxiety medications, or a combination of the two.
